Zack Snyder surprised fans over Christmas by sharing never-seen-before test photos of
Henry Cavill wearing
Christopher Reeve’s original Superman suit. The images date back to the early casting phase of Snyder’s DC Universe and show the moment when Cavill’s journey as the Man of Steel truly began. Snyder used these photos to convince Warner Bros. that Cavill was the right choice to play Superman.
Zack Snyder reveals how Henry Cavill was locked in as Superman
The photos were shared by Zack Snyder himself on his Instagram account. He explained that they were shown to Warner Bros. executives while casting for ‘Man of Steel’ in 2013. According to Snyder, the decision became clear almost instantly.
“Henry Cavill. The original Superman suit. This photo. It was undeniable,” Snyder wrote in one caption.
He added in another post, “With the last image I shared, and this one, we showed WB [and] everyone agreed: Henry Cavill was Superman. That’s where the journey began.”
These images signify the passing of the torch from Christopher Reeve’s iconic portrayal to a new generation of Superman on screen.
Henry Cavill’s Superman journey and the brief comeback
Henry Cavill went on to play Superman in three films within Snyder’s DC Universe: ‘Man of Steel’, ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, and ‘Justice League’. After a five-year gap, he surprised fans with a return in the post-credits scene of ‘Black Adam’ in 2022.
At the time, Cavill confirmed the comeback on Instagram, writing, “I am back as Superman. Thank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.”
Soon after, during a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused podcast at 92NY, he said, “There is such a bright future ahead for the character. I’m so excited to tell a story with an enormously joyful Superman.”
However, the return was short-lived. Just days later, James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios, effectively ending Snyder’s DC Universe. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn called the situation “unfair” for Cavill, explaining that the reboot plan was already in place.
“The day our [DC] deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back,” Gunn said. “So it was really unfair to him and a total bummer… That was really unfortunate.”
No bad blood and the future of Superman
Despite the upheaval, Gunn and Snyder remained in touch. Gunn later confirmed on X that there were no hard feelings between them. He also told Fandango that he consulted Snyder while designing the new Superman suit for the reboot.
“One of the biggest questions was, ‘Were we gonna have trunks, or were we gonna not have trunks?’” Gunn shared. “I talked to Zack Snyder… and I was feeling exactly the same way.”
Gunn’s DC Universe moves forward with ‘Supergirl’ in summer 2026, followed by the ‘Superman’ sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow’.
