The death of Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain is back in the headlines after new forensic details indicate that the singer may have been killed and that he may not have died by suicide after all.
In a new report, a forensic scientist has blown the lid open on the singer's death case almost 32 years after he was found dead on April 5, 1994, at the age of 27, in a greenhouse above his Seattle home.
The Daily Mail reports that an independent researcher has asserted that the rock icon was the victim of homicide rather than suicide, a conclusion the Seattle police have firmly rejected. According to the report, the King County Medical Examiner ruled his death a 'suicide', determining that the singer died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. However, an unofficial private-sector team of forensic scientists has revisited the autopsy and crime scene materials.
Independent researcher Michelle Wilkins, who collaborated with the team, told Daily Mail that forensic specialist Brian Burnett reached a stark conclusion after examining the evidence. “This is a homicide. We’ve got to do something about this,” she quoted him as saying after three days of review.
Wilkins said the assessment was based on a detailed re-examination of the autopsy findings, which she claims revealed signs inconsistent with a gunshot death. According to the report, the team produced ten points of evidence suggesting that Cobain may have been confronted by one or more assailants, forcibly given a heroin overdose to incapacitate him, and then shot in the head.
They also claimed that the shotgun found in his hands, was allegedly placed in his arms and a suicide note was partially forged.
“There are things in the autopsy that go, well, wait, this person didn’t die very quickly of a gunshot blast,” Wilkins said. “The necrosis of the brain and liver happens in an overdose. It doesn’t happen in a shotgun death.”
Wilkins pointed to autopsy findings that included fluid in the lungs, bleeding in the eyes, and damage to the brain and liver are common in heroin overdose cases. The report also noted the absence of blood drawn into the airways, which is frequently observed in gunshot deaths to the head. This indicates that although Cobain was shot in the head, his brainstem, which controls breathing, was not likely damaged.
Wilkins argued that the positioning of the singer's arm also did not show the 'rigid posturing' typically seen with brainstem injury. This fuelled speculation that he may have been physically incapacitated or drugged before being fatally shot.
Noting glaring inaccuracies in the crime scene photos, Wilkins claimed his death appeared to be staged. She said, “To me, it looks like someone staged a movie and wanted you to be absolutely certain this was a suicide.”
She also questioned whether Cobain, allegedly heavily drugged at the time, could have handled the firearm. “If you look at the crime scene photos, you can see how big that gun is,” she said. “Imagine he’s comatose and dying, and also the way that he would have had to hold it… it’s six pounds.”
She also drew attention to Cobain’s left hand that held up the gun. She said, “If you ever look at photos of shotgun suicides, they are brutal. There is no universe where that hand is not covered in blood,” she said. “You could eat off of… well, I mean, gross, but, like, his hand is so clean.”
According to the report, the report suggests that Cobain’s hand may have been placed on the weapon after death, which could also explain the thumbprint-like mark observed during the investigation.
The alleged suicide note has also raised sepculation of a forgery. “The top of the note is written by Kurt,” Wilkins said. “There’s nothing about suicide in that. It’s basically just him talking about quitting the band.” She added that the final four lines appeared different in handwriting. “If you even look at the note, you can see that the last four lines are written in different… the text is a little bit different. It’s bigger, it’s… looks more scrawly.”
Despite the renewed claims, authorities have made clear that their position has not changed. A spokesperson for the Seattle Police Department told Daily Mail that the case is not being reopened. “Our detective concluded that he died by suicide, and this continues to be the position held by this department,” the spokesperson said.
Cobain’s death remains one of the biggest tragedies in music history, with fans also resorting to copycat suicides.
