‘The Odyssey’ trailer shows Odysseus’ long journey home

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures is backing the release, which the report describes as Nolan’s “hotly-anticipated epic.” The trailer follows the Greek hero through a “long, torturous and fantastical trip home” as he tries to rescue his family and reclaim his place in Ithaca. The new footage introduces several key characters. Robert Pattinson appears as Antinous, Penelope’s “sniveling suitor” who wants to marry the queen and take control of Ithaca. Charlize Theron plays the nymph Calypso. John Leguizamo appears as Odysseus’ servant Eumaeus, while Jon Bernthal plays Menelaus, the Greek king of Sparta and brother of Agamemnon. The cast also includes Zendaya as the goddess Athena, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, Himesh Patel as Eurylochus, Mia Goth as Melantho, Jimmy Gonzales as Cepheus, Lupita Nyong’o, and Will Yun Lee in undisclosed roles.

Christopher Nolan brings Homer’s epic to IMAX screens

The trailer also gives the “first proper look” at the “not-so mythical Cyclops.Nolan’s film adapts Homer’s ancient Greek epic ‘The Odyssey,’ and incorporates major mythological elements, including the sirens. Nolan shot ‘The Odyssey’ entirely on IMAX cameras. The battle scenes in the trailer suggest a large-scale theatrical release aimed at premium screens. The film also faces significant box-office pressure. Nolan has a strong commercial record, but ‘The Odyssey’ is still described in the report as “something of a gamble.” The story’s ancient Greek source material is not familiar to every general moviegoer, and the film’s reported budget stands at USD 250 million. That makes ‘The Odyssey’ the most expensive film of Nolan’s career. The trailer, however, focuses on Odysseus, his family, and the fight to return home.
