BATHINDA: Union women and child development minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday said the Congress failed to provide basic necessities to women for a dignified life despite ruling the country for decades.
Addressing an election in support of BJP Bathinda Urban candidate Raj Garg Nambardar, Irani said the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre provided women dignity by constructing 10 crore toilets and making most part of the country as open defecation free (ODF).

She said in Punjab, the Congress never proved to be people friendly as its leaders had never faced such hardships of life and the only motive of its leaders was to amass wealth. “The Congress could never feel the pain of the poor women as those in upper echelons of life could never feel pain. Sensing the pain of women, Modi government provided crores of free LPG cylinders and 13 lakh cylinders in Punjab,” she added.
She said while BJP was for all religions, the Congress was trying to divide society by raising undue issues.
‘Vote for change’
Union minister for culture Meenakshi Lekhi said in Ludhiana on Tuesday night that BJP should get the vote if Punjab wanted the number-one status and more things like the Golden Gate of Amritsar, best highways, AIIMS, Smart City projects, and an airport that had come from the Centre.
