Visakhapatnam: "Discipline is more reliable than motivation. Motivation fluctuates depending on circumstances, whereas discipline builds habits that drive long-term success," said Dr Garima Bhagat, joint secretary (land systems), ministry of defence, while addressing
International Women's Day celebrations at the Indian Institute of Management Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
Dr Bhagat reflected on the significance of Women's Day and urged women to challenge stereotypes. She stressed that participation in workplaces and leadership roles is an inherent right, not something to be justified with productivity statistics. She highlighted SMART goal-setting, regular physical exercise, and self-care.

"Equally important is having ‘me time', particularly for women who often prioritise others' needs over their own.
Self-care should not be viewed as selfish but as necessary for maintaining balance and fulfilment," she said.
IIM Visakhapatnam Director Prof M Chandrasekhar underlined the institute's commitment to gender equity, pointing out that the PGP batch of 2025 has 52% women students and nearly 40% women faculty. He cited research showing that organisations with greater gender diversity perform significantly better, with companies led by women up to 25% more likely to outperform peers.
Prof MV Anuradha and others also spoke. The chief guest distributed prizes to winners of competitions held for students, faculty, and staff. Cultural programmes followed the formal proceedings.
