Iron ore deposits unearthed in Prakasam district
Ongole: The discovery of substantial magnetite deposits in Prakasam district has drawn wide attention, with preliminary exploration indicating promising reserves beneath the surface. Geological teams have conducted drilling operations in identified zones to assess the extent, depth, and quality of the mineral.Experts reported magnetite samples containing iron (Fe) in the range of 18–25%. Though considered low-grade ore, specialists explained that beneficiation (or ore dressing) processes can upgrade it for industrial use.

Initial estimates suggest Prakasam may hold nearly 800 million tonnes of magnetite reserves. Detailed geological mapping and feasibility studies are underway to confirm the quantity and commercial viability. Officials noted that, if validated, the district could emerge as a significant contributor to the mineral sector. Private steel giant JSW Steel, which won the bid for exploration, has fast-tracked the process with a pilot study.Authorities clarified that the mineral will not be exported in raw form.
A beneficiation plant is proposed within the district to refine the ore, remove impurities, and enhance iron content—converting low-grade magnetite into high-grade material suitable for steel manufacturing. Experts said this value addition would improve commercial prospects and ensure better returns.AP Maritime Board chairman Damacharla Satya said that the facility would generate employment and boost ancillary economic activity. Infrastructure development, including transport and processing facilities, will gain momentum once the project enters implementation.Currently, the project remains in the exploration phase. Officials stressed that statutory clearances, environmental evaluations, and public consultations will precede any large-scale mining. With significant reserves projected and plans for local beneficiation, Prakasam district could witness major mineral-based industrial growth in the coming years, subject to ongoing studies and approvals.
