Vijayawada: A 25-year-old brain-dead woman has given a new lease of life to six people after her family donated her organs on Tuesday. According to the information, the woman, identified as Naidu Madhusri, a resident of Jangareddy Gudem, was admitted to KIMS SIKHARA Hospital in Guntur on March 13, after a harrowing week-long medical emergency.
According to the woman's family, Madhusri attempted suicide on March 8, following personal family issues. She was initially rushed to a local hospital in Jangareddy Gudem for emergency treatment. After providing primary aid, doctors there advised the family to seek care at a higher medical centre. The family then moved her to a private hospital in Vijayawada, where doctors recommended transferring her to a more advanced facility for better treatment.
Subsequently, the woman was rushed to KIMS, where a team of specialists, including neurologists, provided her with the highest level of medical care. Despite their relentless efforts, her condition did not show any signs of improvement. On March 15, doctors performed an apnea test, which confirmed the cessation of brainstem function, and she was declared brain-dead.
Following the woman's family's consent, the Jeevandhan authorities activated the organ allocation process.
As per protocol, Madhusri's healthy organs were allocated to waiting list aspirants in the queue.
Her two kidneys were transplanted to two patients suffering from end-stage renal disease, while her liver saved one person, and her lungs gave the gift of breath to a patient with chronic respiratory failure. Further, the woman's eyes were harvested and offered to patients with corneal blindness.
