Relentless heat pushes mercury to 45°C, city braces for more extreme days
Varanasi: The city is currently in the grip of a severe heatwave, with conditions intensifying in line with the peak pre-monsoon summer season, with the maximum temperature touching 45°C, marking a 4.4°C departure from normal.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures may climb further to 45–47°C in the coming days. The intense heat has left roads and ghats unusually deserted during the day.
The weather remains harsh and unforgiving, dominated by clear skies, dry air, low humidity, and hot winds, pushing the heat index even higher. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the ongoing heatwave, which is expected to persist at least until May 23, with no significant rainfall in sight.
In response, the DM has released safety advisories, urging residents to remain indoors during peak hours, stay well hydrated, avoid direct exposure to the sun and use reflective coverings on windows.
To ensure the convenience of devotees and a smooth darshan experience, the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple has implemented special arrangements. Earthen pots filled with cool water have been placed at several points within the temple premises and along the darshan route to help devotees beat the heat.
In addition, jute mats have been spread across the pathway to make walking more comfortable, while mist fans have been installed to create a cooling effect through a continuous spray of fine water droplets and air.
Despite the intense summer heat, the devotion and enthusiasm of visitors to Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple remain unwavering. Devotees from across India and abroad continue to arrive in large numbers to seek the blessings and darshan.
