Varanasi: Two more FIRs were registered against UP Congress chief Ajay Rai for his alleged derogatory remarks against PM Narendra Modi.
The FIRs were lodged by Varanasi residents, Sunita Soni and Aryan Pandya, at the Chowk police station in the city on Saturday night. Rai was booked under Section 352 (intentional insults intended to provoke a breach of the peace) of BNS. The women alleged that Rai has hurt public sentiment by insulting and abusing PM Modi who holds a constitutional position and is the most popular leader of current times. .
Earlier on Saturday, BJP functionary Neeraj Rawat had lodged an FIR against Rai for making objectionable remarks against PM Narendra Modi and violating public order during a political gathering in Mahoba on Friday.
Ajay Rai has maintained that a purported video showing him making the alleged remarks is “AI-generated.”
On Sunday, UP govt ministers and BJP office bearers held a joint press conference at the party in Varanasi and decried Rai’s remarks against Modi, who represents the city in the Lok Sabha.
UP minister Ravindra Jaiswal demanded strict action against those using undignified language against the PM. He said that numerous cases are registered against Rai and the public has repeatedly rejected him in elections, yet he continues to disregard public sentiment.
UP minister Hansraj Vishwakarma said the PM is a popular leader in India and the world and the use of derogatory language against such a leader should be considered as a serious offence.
Kashi regional unit president Dilip Singh Patel said Rai has lost his mental balance. Already struggling with his criminal image and involvement in multiple criminal cases, Rai is using politics to shield himself from legal action, Patel claimed.
Varanasi mayor Ashok Tiwari said the extensive development has been done in Varanasi under PM Modi’s leadership. He said that the use of abusive language against the Prime Minister is an insult to the people of Varanasi.
BJP city chief Pradeep Agrahari demanded district administration and police to act against Rai. The press conference was also addressed by UP minister Dayashankar Mishra Dayalu, MLAs Neelkanth Tiwari and Saurabh Srivastava and MLC Dharmendra Singh.
