Trichy: Emphasis on early intervention, inclusive education, and social acceptance marked the World Down Syndrome day in Trichy on Friday.
Dr Senthil Kumar Nallusamy, chief cardiologist, Rana hospital, who was the chief guest at the event, explained that Down syndrome is a genetic condition, scientifically known as Trisomy 21, where an individual has an extra copy of chromosome 21. He further highlighted the significance of observing World Down Syndrome Day on March 21 (3/21). He explained that the basic genetic defect in Down syndrome involves three copies of chromosome 21, and hence the date—the 3rd month and 21st day—symbolically represents this condition.
Kumar noted that individuals with Down syndrome bring unique strengths and positivity to society.
Speakers highlighted the importance of spreading awareness, reducing stigma, and ensuring equal opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome. The programme featured awareness activities and interactions, promoting the message of inclusion and compassion. The event concluded with a collective commitment to support individuals with Down syndrome in leading lives of dignity, independence, and acceptance.
