Trichy: A day after temperature in Trichy touched 40.5 degree celsius, which is the highest this season, special beds have been set up in MGMGH to treat patients with heatstroke.
Hospital sources said there are a total of 14 beds with two in red zone, four in IMCU, eight in other wards. "All of them are air conditioned and we are well equipped to handle the cases. Apart from this there have been about 20 ORS centres across the hospital for people to be hydrated. Hydration and the right kind of hydration is key during summers," the source said.
Officials have urged the public to avoid non-essential travel between 10am and 3pm., warning that the heat wave is likely to intensify in the coming days. "Labourers should watch out and try to make sure that they are not exposed to sun," an official said.
Doctors said that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to skin blisters, muscle cramps, dizziness, fainting, and heatstroke. In severe cases, excessive heat exposure may result in stroke, loss of consciousness, organ failure, and even a life-threatening coma if not treated promptly. People experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, or signs of heatstroke have been advised to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest govt hospital, health officials added.
