Trichy: A 24-year-old rowdy was arrested for vandalising a shop owned by a differently-abled person and assaulting him in Trichy on Monday.
The accused was identified as K Veeraiyan, a history-sheeter from Chinthamani who has several prior cases registered against him.
On Monday around 1.30pm, Veeraiyan saw an acquaintance, a 33-year-old man named K Senthil from Poosari Street standing in front of a shop owned by Dhilip Kumar, who has hearing and speech disabilities.
Veeraiyan demanded 2,000 from Senthil for his personal expenses. When Senthil refused, Veeraiyan targeted Dhilip Kumar instead. He smashed the shop's showcase, picked up a piece of broken glass, and used it to assault and threaten Dhilip Kumar before robbing him of 4,000. He then escaped from the scene.
Dhilip Kumar received treatment at a private hospital. Senthil subsequently lodged a complaint at the Fort police station. Police registered a case against Veeraiyan under sections 309(4), 311, and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for robbery, robbery causing grievous hurt, and criminal intimidation.
Police arrested Veeraiyan on Tuesday. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
