Open cable pits irk residents in Trichy
Trichy: Delay in closing pits dug for laying private telecom cables in parts of the city has been irking residents, with many complaining of safety risks and loss of parking space.According to corporation sources, a private telecom company has been permitted to install fibre optic cables in areas including the Cantonment, using the trenchless method. However, pits dug along roads have remained open for weeks without proper restoration. Collector Office Road, which connects Major Saravanan roundabout with the district collectorate, has several such open pits, posing a threat to pedestrians. "Already we do not have much parking space near shopping complexes. The open pits are taking away even the minimal space available, so we are forced to park vehicles on the carriageway," said T Rajendran, a resident of Raja Colony. Residents said some of the pits, about two to three feet deep, have also become dumping spots for plastic waste. Shopkeepers alleged that pedestrians have slipped into these pits at night. Corporation officials said they would inspect the sites and direct the telecom company to close the pits and restore the affected stretches. MSID:: 129636223 413 |
