Farmers protest near Cauvery river

Trichy: Dozens of farmers affiliated with the National South Indian Rivers Interlinking Farmers' Association protested near the Cauvery river in Trichy on Monday.Farmers led by P Ayyakkannu undertook the protest near the Oyamari crematorium demanding uninterrupted provision of loans to farmers through cooperative societies, prevention of corruption at paddy procurement centres, immediate procurement of paddy grains that have been lying stagnant, and permission to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convey their grievances.The Fort station police arrived at the spot and arrested them. Subsequently, the authorities took the farmers to Ayyakkannu's residence at Annamalai Nagar and placed them under house arrest.
