Trichy: Trichy MP Durai Vaiko has urged authorities to address accident-prone stretches on the Trichy–Pudukottai National Highway near the international airport, calling for immediate preventive measures.
In representations to the Trichy city police, Trichy Corporation and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the MP highlighted safety concerns along the busy corridor that connects the airport, police offices and several educational institutions. The stretch has witnessed two recent fatal accidents.
Pointing to multiple median openings that allow sudden crossings by two-wheeler riders and pedestrians, he urged NHAI to close those that are underutilised.
He also called on the city police to upgrade safety infrastructure, noting that several barricades lack reflective stickers, posing risks to motorists at night. He recommended installing high-quality barricades along the 3km stretch between TVS tollgate and the airport.
Responding to residents' complaints about poor illumination along a portion of the highway running perpendicular to the airport runway, Durai Vaiko asked the corporation to improve streetlighting without affecting airport operations. The issue was earlier flagged in a TOI report titled "Barricades meant for safety add to danger on Trichy NHs" on February 26.
"NHAI officials have been asked to conduct a detailed review of the NH stretch with traffic police and other stakeholders to enhance road safety," the MP said.
