Trichy: A 17-year-old boy riding pillion on a sports bike was killed while the 19-year-old rider suffered severe injuries in a road accident at Cantonment in Trichy city late on Wednesday night. Police said N Ragavan, 19, and G Sriram, 17, both from Uyyakondan Thirumalai, were proceeding on a high-end sports bike from Major Saravanan roundabout to Central bus stand. As the bike was approaching 117 Battalion entrance gate at high speed around 11.30pm, Ragavan tried to overtake a vehicle moving ahead. However, as a car was coming from the opposite direction, he tried to avoid hitting it, but lost control of the bike.

Both fell on the road and sustained severe injuries, including to the face, head, and legs. Though onlookers rushed the injured boys to a private hospital near the accident site, police said Sriram succumbed to his injuries. Ragavan is under observation at the hospital. The sports bike was seized and Cantonment police are investigating. Citing frequent accidents on Major Saravanan Road, residents sought a median to streamline traffic.
