Meghalaya seeks over 1L-crore from finance commission

Shillong: Meghalaya govt has sought Rs 1,14,745 crore over a five-year period as grants from the 16th Finance Commission (FC). A team of the commission, led by chairman Arvind Panagariya, met chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday.“The meeting with the 16th Finance Commission featured a comprehensive presentation on Meghalaya’s current standing, including its complex challenges. Today, we introduced our mission, which provides a strategic roadmap for Meghalaya’s enhancement. We also handed over the state memorandum to chairperson Arvind Panagariya at the meeting,” Sangma said.“We look forward to the commission’s consideration of our memorandum and support towards realising our vision. We are grateful for the commission’s expert recommendations, and look forward to working together to make Meghalaya an exemplary state, playing a vital role in India’s growth,” the CM said during the meeting.He added that in many sectors, the state is not doing well, particularly in health and education. “We took up the challenge, identified the concerns and are now resolving the problems in a systematic manner,” he said, referring to the challenges his govt had inherited from the previous regime.The CM said through the XVth FC, the state was awarded Rs 3,000 crore and through externally aided ,projects the state garnered a funding of around Rs 9,000 crore to initiate development and infrastructure projects.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has reserved its decision on a petition by former women's commission chairperson Gajjala Venkata Lakshmi challenging her removal by the state government. Venkata Lakshmi's counsel argued her tenure should last two years, while the government maintained her term ended with the resignation of her predecessor, Vasireddy Padma.
