Dumka: Locals rescued a newborn left abandoned in a sack along the roadside near Kajuwahiya forest in Dumka district on Wednesday.
According to reports, residents rushed to the spot after hearing the baby boy crying and rescued him before informing the authorities.
Ranju Devi, a resident of Haldipatti village, along with some youths, rescued the newborn. An ambulance was called, and the baby was taken to the nearby community health centre (CHC) for medical attention.
Doctors at the CHC examined the baby and confirmed he was born only a few hours earlier. In view of his condition and the need for better treatment, the newborn was later referred to the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital (PJMCH) in Dumka.
Hospital sources said the baby is undergoing treatment under the supervision of the child welfare committee (CWC). Committee’s chairperson Kiran Tiwari said that after treatment, the newborn will be presented before the CWC for further legal and welfare procedures.
Ranju, 36, who was one of the rescuers, and her husband expressed their willingness to adopt the child through the proper legal process.
“The Child Development and Legal Services Authority (CDLS) will complete the necessary legal procedures within two months to declare the child free for adoption. Thereafter, the process will proceed through the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), following the waiting list of registered couples,” Tiwari said.
Police have launched an investigation and are trying to identify the people who abandoned the newborn near the forest road.
