LPG Shortage Forces Ranchi Pet Owners to Switch to Packaged Food
Ranchi: The LPG disruption has made many pet owners in the city shift from home-cooked meals to packaged alternatives like dry kibble and wet gravy for their furry companions.
For many, the decision is a pragmatic albeit difficult one. Manisha Singh, a dog owner, said, “Pet meals don’t consume a vast amount of LPG but I am being mindful of use and have shifted to store-bought food for my dog.”
Similarly, Arvind Sharma, who cares for four dogs, said that the shift is affecting the household budget. “The nutrient-rich packaged options for my pets are costlier but saving LPG remains the absolute priority. After all we cannot survive on packaged food alone.”
The crisis has also affected those feeding stray animals. Anand Kumar, who earlier provided milk and rotis to stray dogs in his society, has been forced to switch to packaged food to ensure the canines don’t go hungry. “They wait for me every day,” he said.
The situation is also difficult at shelter homes like the Hope and Animal Trust in Khunti. Praveen Ohal, who manages over 20 injured or recovering dogs, revealed that they have resorted to using coal as fuel, despite its price doubling recently. “If the crisis persists, feeding the animals will become an insurmountable challenge. I urge people to step forward and provide food for the dogs,” he said.
Jay, owner of a pet food shop, reported a 15% surge in packaged food sales over the last month. “There has been a spike in demand for gravy packets among those who previously cooked meat at home. Many pet owners I know have switched completely to packaged food instead of home-cooked meals,” he said.
He said that several budget-friendly brands have entered the market, providing a lifeline for owners who find premium imported labels beyond their reach.
