Lack of basic facilities in wards with malls, colonies
Ranchi: In the recent past, Ward no. 3 which comprises landmark spots including the Morabadi Ground and Tagore Hills, underwent rapid development with the opening of malls, showrooms of various brands, housing enclaves, and private houses.
However, amid these developments, there is a scarcity of basic civic needs such as drains, proper roads, hygiene, and drinking water supply in several habitations in the ward.
It may be stated here that almost 50 per cent of inhabitants of the ward are from tribal communities. A case in point is Chiroundi, which is an upcoming locality in the area with several apartments and shopping complexes on the main road. As one goes into the interior areas, there are localities with no metalled paths and roads with no drainage.
A local, Hemanti Devi, said, “During the monsoon, the entire area becomes flooded with rainwater. We built drains in front of our houses at our own cost. We are hoping that, after winning, the ward councillor would address the problem.”
A local, Pankaj Gupta, said, “We need waste bins at different places in the locality so that people can dump their household remains if there is a delay in the visit of the RMC waste-carrying vans. Presently, people are dumping them on vacant land, which often starts stinking.” Besides, there are a number of housing complexes around Tagore Hills where residents are facing an acute water crisis. According to locals, they depend on tankers for almost six months in a year.
The opening of shopping complexes and the increased movement of vehicles towards Ormanjhi and other places of the state through this ward also leads to traffic congestion during most parts of the day.
When asked, the outgoing ward councillor, Basanti Lakra, admitted that there were several roads without drains in her ward. She said, “In several cases, people refused to give land for constructing the roads. As far as water supply is concerned, Tagore Hill is worst affected as it is a dry zone. The water supply is not reaching the place from the ‘jal minar’ located about 1.5 kilometres away.” Lakra, who filed her nomination again for the urban bodies election, said that she would address these problems if elected.
