Ranchi: The Jharkhand high court on Tuesday directed the superintendent of Medininagar jail to ensure better medical treatment for Dinesh Gope, former supremo of the banned outfit People’s Liberation Front of India, at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.
Justice Gautam Kumar Choudhary was hearing a petition filed by Gope seeking improved treatment for his deteriorating health. Gope is suffering from a neurological disorder that requires advanced medical care.
A medical committee from the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) had examined Gope and recommended that his treatment be continued at a specialised medical centre. The committee said that his condition could not be adequately treated at the Ranchi health facility and advised referral to AIIMS.
Gope was arrested by the Jharkhand Police along with a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team after being apprehended in Nepal on May 21, 2023. He was initially lodged at Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar, Ranchi, where he sustained a hand injury last year. He was later shifted to Medininagar jail in Sept 2024.
Although he initially underwent treatment at Rims, worsening neurological complications led to his referral to AIIMS for specialised care. In May 2024, the high court was informed that authorities were making efforts to secure an appointment with a specialist at AIIMS.
The HC also directed the state govt to file a response and submit a status report on the progress within a fortnight. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on Feb 17.
