Bokaro: The Giridih district police have cracked the sensational Neemadih double murder case by arresting the accused Shrikant Chaudhary on Tuesday. Later in the day, Chaudhary was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition after he tried to kill himself by slitting his throat in police custody.
According to the police, Chaudhary killed two girls identified as Soni Devi and Rinku Devi, who went missing after the Karma festival rituals last week. Their bodies were later found in the Neemadih forest.
During interrogation in custody, Chaudhary told the police that he was in a relationship with Soni but suspected her of being involved with another man. He called Soni to their usual meeting place in the forest, where she was accompanied by her friend, Rinku.
While Rinku stayed behind, Chaudhary and Soni moved deeper into the forest. After a heated argument, he strangled Soni.
Chaudhary then went back and lied to Rinku that Soni had fainted. He then led her to the crime scene. Upon seeing Soni’s lifeless body, Rinku panicked. To silence her, Chaudhary murdered her as well.
Talking to the media, SDPO Rajendra Prasad said, “When Gawana police began searching for the two missing women on September 4, they found Chaudhary’s link with Soni. Though he initially refused to cooperate, our technical team assisted in the probe. Under sustained interrogation, he confessed, and both bodies were recovered. It also came to light that Rinku often acted as a lookout whenever Chaudhary met Soni.”
The bodies of both women were discovered late on Monday evening in the Neemadih forest. Soni’s in-laws reside in Satgaon, Koderma, while her parental home is in Neemadih. Rinku was a resident of Neemadih.
Following the recovery of the bodies, relatives and villagers gathered at the police station and demanded strict and immediate action against the accused. Police promptly arrested Chaudhary, and in the evening, he attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a sharp object. Chaudhary was immediately rushed to the block hospital by police officers, where doctors declared his condition critical. He was later referred to the Giridih sadar hospital for advanced treatment.
Police said Chaudhary was scheduled to be produced at a press briefing in the Khori Mahua subdivision before being sent to jail. “At present, saving his life is a priority. We are closely monitoring the situation, and a detailed inquiry will follow,” SDPO Prasad said.
