CG Zoo, WII radio-tag and release rescued ‘Jatayu’

Raipur: In a significant step for avian conservation, Nandanvan Zoo and Safari, Atal Nagar Nava Raipur, in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), successfully radio-tagged and released a rescued , named Himalayan Griffon Vulture 'Jatayu', back into its natural habitat.'Jatayu' was rescued two months ago from Bilaspur and rehabilitated under the veterinary care of Jungle Safari and Zoo. Recognising the importance of studying this species, a proposal seeking permission for radio-tagging was submitted to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). Following approval, the radio-tagging procedure was conducted on April 7, 2025, under the direction of Director cum Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Jungle Safari, Naya Raipur. The vulture was released on April 11, 2025, after ensuring its full recovery and successful transmitter installation.The release was conducted in the presence of Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Raipur, Satovisha Samajdar, and Director cum DFO, Jungle Safari, Ganveer Dhammshil. The primary objective of this radio-tagging initiative is to study the migration patterns, roosting behaviour, and potential threats faced by the Himalayan Griffon Vulture. This data is crucial for developing effective long-term conservation strategies for this vulnerable species.Ganveer emphasised the importance of this milestone in vulture conservation efforts undertaken by the Chhattisgarh Forest Department. He highlighted the successful conservation of these species with the support of the veterinary department, local communities, and the birding community in Chhattisgarh.The Himalayan Griffon Vulture (Gyps himalayensis) is one of the largest Old-World vultures, native to the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau. This scavenger plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by efficiently disposing of animal carcasses. The species is currently listed as "Near Threatened" on the IUCN Red List, indicating that it faces threats that could lead to a rapid population decline if not addressed. While typically associated with the Himalayan range, these vultures are also seasonally recorded in parts of Central India, including Chhattisgarh, during their migratory movements.This marks the second successful vulture tagging initiative in the state. In Dec 2024, a rescued Egyptian Vulture was also radio-tagged and released into the wild with technical support from Dr Suresh of WII. The tagged Egyptian Vulture is currently located on the outskirts of Abhanpur town in Raipur district.
