PUNE: About 200 people on Sunday participated in a 4km walkathon to increase the awareness about the advantages of walking for leading a healthy life.
The walkathon started at 7am from Sancheti Hospital in the heart of the city and culminated at Savitribai Phule Pune University. The participants walked the distance via Ganeshkhind Road.
The theme of the walkathon was “Walk for healthy bones & joints”.

The Pune Orthopaedic Society organized the event conducted by Sancheti Hospital. Mayor Mukta Tilak and Commissioner of Police Rashmi Shukla flagged off the walkathon.
Inaugurating the event, Tilak urged Puneites to walk for leading a healthy life. “There are more than 200 parks in the city. Night parks have also been developed. Cash in on them,” she said.
The city police chief, Shukla, said that walking was the best exercise for the body and bones. “I walk daily in the morning and feel very energetic during the whole day of work,” she said.
Pune Orthopedic Society president Dr Neeraj Adkar urged people to exercise for 30 minutes to maintain a good healthy life. He also advised citizens to have balanced diet.
Echoing Dr Adkar, the society’s secretary, Dr Prashant Tonape, said, “Just add yoga to walking.”
The chairman of Sancheti Hospital, Dr Parag Sancheti, said, “Walk for healthy bones. Regular brisk long walks improve bone density and mobility. Range-of-motion exercises increase the amount of movement in a joint and muscle.”
