Industries consume 42.7% share of power

Pune: The share of electricity consumption of industries in the state has increased over the past five years. Industries consumed 42.73% of the total electricity used in Maharashtra, which is the highest compared to domestic at 18.87%, agriculture at 26.49% and commercial at 6.55% share, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) data shows."The demand for industrial electricity has increased by 23% in three years," chief minister and state power minister Devendra Fadnavis had said in an assembly session last week. The rising share of industrial electricity consumption is contrasted by the decline in the share of industrial consumers. In FY25, the 4.78 lakh industrial customers constitute 1.42% of the total number of MSEDCL consumers at 3.12 crore.Rising urbanisation and new developing areas in the metro cities has led to an increase in the share of domestic consumers which is close to 2.33 crore as of FY25.The next wave of demand for electricity is expected to come from the data centre sector. There is currently 427MW power demand from the data centre industry at the national level with nearly 48% of it located in Mumbai Metropolitan Region. MIDC CEO P Velrasu recently had said that most of the data centres in the state are concentrated around Navi Mumbai and some pockets of Pune. With 60% data centre capacity in Maharashtra, the state govt had anticipated that ample electricity will be required to operate the data centres.
