Villupuram: If there is a common agenda for DMK, AIADMK and PMK it will be defeating People's Welfare Front's chief ministerial candidate Vijayakanth. The three parties are keen to defeat DMDK founder-leader Vijayakanth, who will be contesting from Ulundurpet constituency in Villupuram district.
PMK, which earlier fielded R Ramamoorthy as its candidate from Ulundurpet, replaced him with party's public relation officer and Advocates' forum for social justice president K Balu on April 19 in an effort to trounce the DMDK leader.
The party strongly believed that Balu has a better chance of winning the polls from Ulundurpet than the local candidate (Ramamoorthy).
"Ramamoorthy is also a good candidate but we wanted to field a strong candidate in Ulundurpet to ensure victory for the party. People say the new candidate Balu was not from the region. But Balu has the ability to gain the trust and confidence of the people in no time. We can feel the change in people's attitude as soon as he (Balu) begins the campaign," said a PMK functionary.
PMK leaders have been highly severe on Vijayakanth after the actor turned politician has been projecting DMDK as the third largest party in the state while PMK has been claiming that it is the only alternative to the two strong Dravidian parties. The two parties that announced its chief ministerial candidates have locked horns to establish their position in the state politics.
Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), which was earlier allotted Ulundurpet assembly constituency by the DMK, surrendered it expressing its inability to contest. The decision turned to be an opportunity for the DMK to settle scores with the DMDK leader for rejecting open offers to join the alliance headed by the DMK. DMK functionaries and cadres will leave no stones unturned to defeat Vijayakanth.
