JD(U) initiates disqualification proceedings against Banka MP
Patna: JD(U) on Wednesday began formal proceedings to seek the disqualification of its own Lok Sabha MP, Giridhari Yadav, accusing him of indulging in anti-party activities. The move marks a serious escalation in the party’s action against the Banka MP, who has been under scrutiny for months over conduct the party says has repeatedly gone against its official line.
JD(U) parliamentary party leader in the Lok Sabha, Dileshwar Kamait, met Speaker Om Birla in Parliament and submitted a formal complaint seeking termination of Yadav’s membership. In the petition, Kamait alleged that Yadav campaigned against the JD(U)’s official candidate in the Belhar constituency during the 2025 Bihar assembly elections.
The controversy is linked to Yadav’s son, Chanakya Prakash Ranjan, who contested the Belhar seat on a RJD ticket. According to the JD(U), it has ample evidence that Giridhari supported his son’s campaign against his own party’s candidate.
Kamait said he filed the petition on the party’s direction and maintained that the evidence clearly showed Yadav had worked against JD(U) interests.
Although Chanakya lost the election by a wide margin to JD(U)’s Manoj, the party took a serious view of the episode.
Giridhari is a veteran politician who has won the Banka Lok Sabha seat four times since 1996. He first won on a Janata Dal ticket in 1996, later on an RJD ticket in 2004, and then on JD(U) tickets in 2019 and 2024.
The MP has also faced criticism within the party since July 2025 for public remarks against the Election Commission and the use of electronic voting machines. JD(U) leaders said those comments caused major embarrassment to the party. Despite receiving a show-cause notice earlier, Yadav allegedly continued expressing personal views that contradicted the JD(U)’s official position as a constituent of the NDA.
Yadav denied the allegations on Wednesday, saying there was no record of anti-party activity against him. He also said he was ready to present his case if summoned by the Lok Sabha Speaker.
RJD MP Misa Bharti said Giridhari’s adult son made a choice and contested on the RJD ticket. “His son has contested the election from RJD and he is an adult. An adult can take his own decision,” she added.
JD(U) spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad defended the action as being in the party’s interest.
