Govt approves filling of 20,937 posts to strengthen police force
Patna: The state home department has ordered filling of 20,937 posts in the Bihar Police. Of the total posts, 10,468 will be filled through direct recruitment, while 10,469 will be filled via departmental promotion.
A notification in this regard was issued by the home department on Thursday.
The move aims to modernise Bihar Police, expand the force and strengthen police strength in proportion to the growing population. Aspirants waiting for recruitment and personnel awaiting promotion for long are likely to benefit from the decision.
CM Samrat Choudhary had cleared these appointments in his second cabinet meeting held on April 29, 2026. As per the notification, the home department created 19,288 posts in 2023 under Phase-2 of the ERSS (Emergency Response Support System) project. These include the posts of 259 inspectors, 1,829 sub-inspectors, 1,218 sub-inspectors (SI), 694 drivers/havildars, 2,353 driver constables, 2,943 havildars and 9,992 constables.
These posts were classified by pay level and covered both direct recruitment and promotion. Under the new proposal, 48,447 new posts have been created considering population growth of the state and need for police force. Key posts include 20,937 sub-inspectors and equivalent, 22,010 constables and equivalent, 5,500 driver constables and equivalent.
The govt has now approved reserving 50% of the 20,937 sub-inspector and equivalent posts for promotion. This opens promotion avenues for departmental staff and clears the path for lower-level personnel to become officers.
The home department has sent the letter to the accountant general and finance department in this connection. It clarified that the initial approval for 48,447 posts did not include promotion posts. Now, consent has been given to earmark 50% of SI and equivalent posts for promotion.
