CM relief fund helps treat boy’s cancer

Nagpur: For Kiran Deshmukh and his wife, both daily wage labourers from Parvati Nagar, the past few weeks had turned into a nightmare after their three-year-old son Vivek was diagnosed with blood cancer. With doctors advising immediate chemotherapy, the family was left scrambling for money even as the child's condition worsened.The couple, residents of Savitribai Phule Nagar, said they had exhausted whatever little savings they had on initial tests and hospital visits. According to officials, the child required urgent chemotherapy and supportive treatment at a private hospital in the city. After the matter reached CM Devendra Fadnavis, financial aid of Rs3 lakh was sanctioned from the chief minister's Medical Assistance Fund to support the treatment. The assistance included Rs50,000 towards immediate treatment expenses and Rs2.5 lakh for related medical costs. Following the sanction, the child underwent chemotherapy and other procedures at Wockhardt Hospital. Doctors and family members said the boy's condition has shown improvement following chemotherapy and other medical procedures. The parents said the assistance came at a time when they had nearly lost hope of arranging further funds. "Seeing him smile again after days has given us strength," the family said. They also appreciated the quick processing of the application by the chief minister's Medical Assistance Fund office and thanked chief minister assistance fund cell chief Rameshwar Naik and Nagpur cell chief Dr Sagar Pandey for facilitating the aid. Officials said several economically weaker patients across Maharashtra continue to receive support for critical illnesses through the fund.
