MYSORE: Musa (elakki) banana is costlier than apples in Mysore.After vegetables, it’s the turn of banana to see its price sky-rocketing. Musa price was hovering around Rs 50 till the first week of August. However, it has now gone up to Rs 65, thanks to Shravana masa, the month of festivals, when the demand for musa banana peaks. However, the per-kilo price of apple stands at Rs 60. Hopcoms MD B M Shivalingappa told STOI: "The supply has gone down because of lesser yield. Also, the vendors have increased the price in view of festivals. The price has increased twice in August, and it is expected to remain stagnant for another few weeks.”Kamalakshi M K, a homemaker, said that they use banana daily. “But following a rise in its price, we are buying it in small quantity,” she added.Nagaraja H S, a regular customer, said that the price of banana is more than that of apple. Lokesh L, a vendor at Vani Vilas market, said: “Customers have stopped buying bananas due to its steep price. Regulars have restricted their purchase for only festivals…” Mallesh, a mechanic, said: “The price of elakki banana has doubled. As an alternative, we are buying cavendish banana (pachbale) for daily consumption.”
