Pipeline leak hits water supply in South, Central Mumbai

Mumbai: A major leak in a 1,650mm diameter main water pipeline on Dr E Moses Road led to a large-scale water shutdown across parts of South and Central Mumbai on Thursday, with the BMC taking up emergency repair work on a "war footing."The leakage was detected late Wednesday night in the main water line located near Famous Studio, Mahalaxmi, after a crack developed in the pipeline, resulting in significant water loss, according to the BMC's hydraulic engineering department.Repair work was immediately launched, but civic officials said the scale of the damage requires extensive intervention, leading to a complete or partial suspension of water supply in several parts of D, E and G South wards.The civic body has appealed to residents in affected areas to use water judiciously and cooperate during the disruption.In D ward, areas including Lamington Road, Grant Road (East), Mumbai Central, Tardeo, parts of Girgaum and Chowpatty will either face complete shutdown or low-pressure supply depending on location. Several residential and commercial pockets are expected to be impacted through the day.In E ward, water supply will remain completely shut in areas such as Kamathipura, Agripada, Maulana Azad Road, Sane Guruji Marg, and around Kasturba Hospital and Nair Hospital. Dense residential neighbourhoods in the vicinity are also expected to face inconvenience.In the G South ward, areas including J.R. Boricha Marg, Sane Guruji Marg and Dhobighat will also face a complete water shutdown.Civic officials said teams have been deployed at the site to expedite repairs and restore normal supply at the earliest, though no immediate timeline has been announced for full restoration.The BMC has advised citizens to store water in advance and avoid wastage until the pipeline is fully restored.
