Navi Mumbai: Turbhe police have arrested a 38-year-old man who strangled a 66-year-old woman and dumped her body in a gunny bag about 300 metres from her house. According to Senior Inspector of Turbhe, Abasaheb Patil, the arrested acccused has been identified as Mobin Noor Mohammad Qureshi, who works as a housekeeping staff with an agency.
Qureshi, residing in the neighbourhood of the murder victim Azrunnisa Abdul Waheed Khan, was under severe debt of around Rs 7 lakh. As he saw the victim wearing gold ornaments, he decided to rob her.
On May 18 around 5.30 pm, when the victim woman was returning home after buying groceries, Qureshi met her on the way and took her home under the pretext of offering her a cup of tea. Upon reaching his house, he attempted to rob her of her gold ornaments, when she shouted for help. Qureshi then strangled her with her dupatta. He stuffed her body in a gunny sack and hid it under the bed. Thereafter, around 3 am, when Qureshi’s family was fast asleep, he dumped her body below the streetlight near a house in the locality.
Patil said, “Qureshi has claimed that he sold the robbed gold ornaments to a jeweller in Ghatkopar and has provided the mobile number of the gold buyer. He was produced before Belapur court, which remanded him to police custody till May 25.”
