Kalyan: A 40-year-old physically disabled mobile shop owner was allegedly duped of Rs 35 lakh by two women who promised to arrange his marriage.
The Mahatma Phule police arrested the two accused women, identified as Jayshree Patil, 40, a resident of Kalyan, and Roma Pardeshi, 30, a resident of Mumbai.
According to police, the complainant runs a mobile repairing shop in Kalyan and was unable to find a marriage match due to his disability. Around four years ago, Patil, who was known to the complainant, allegedly introduced him to Pardeshi and assured him that she would marry him.
Senior police inspector Baliramsingh Pardeshi of Mahatma Phule police station said the accused woman gradually gained the complainant’s trust and allegedly started taking money from him on various pretexts. Police said the complainant spent nearly Rs 35 lakh on the woman over the last four years.
“The woman kept delaying the marriage by giving different excuses and continued demanding money from the complainant for various reasons,” said the officer.
Police said the complainant recently became suspicious after both women allegedly stopped answering his phone calls. Realising that he was cheated, he approached Mahatma Phule police station and lodged a complaint.
Based on his statement, police registered a case of cheating and arrested both the accused women. Further investigation is under way to verify the financial transactions and determine whether the accused similarly targeted others.
