The builders' office was on the ground floor of an under-construction building at Pawan Dham, near Mahatma Phule Chowk. One of the police teams was in the builder's office and the other was waiting outside the building. "At 12.40 pm, two men walked into the builder's office with plastic carry bags. They threatened the builder and fired a shot in the air in his cabin. When the police teams rushed to catch them, they fired two rounds at the police and were killed in the retaliatory fire," said Maria.
A country-made revolver and a factory-made revolver was found on them. However, the identity of the men, both in their mid twenties, is yet to be established. The duo had come on foot and were planning to flee on foot. Railway tickets from Kalva to Kalyan were fund in their pockets.
"The watchman and labourers are eye-witnesses to the encounter," Maria said. He added that the police was trying to establish the identities of the men killed through their mobile phones.
The crime branch team was led by Inspector Vijay Salaskar. Others in the team were Inspector Praful Phadke, Assistant police inspectors Satish Mayekar, Nitin Alaknure, sub-inspectors Sanjay Dhumal and Sudhir Dalvi. They were assisted by the Thane crime branch.
"The builder had not lodged any complaint. The police is taking his statement but he is in a state of shock." said sub inspector Mayekar.
Sources said that the duo could be members of a local gang. After the killing of gangster Suresh Manchekar in 2003, local gangs in Thane are trying take his place.
