Meerut: A local court in Bareilly has sentenced a 30-year-old man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his father over a land dispute in 2025. The convicted man's mother was the primary witness in the case. "He killed my husband. He deserves no mercy," Ram Daee, 62, told the court.
The incident took place at Inayatpur in Bareilly district's Nawabganj area. On the evening of April 11, 2025, the convict, Chhatrapal, returned home from work in an inebriated state and demanded his share of a 2.5-bigha plot from his father Lalaram.
When Lalaram, who owned 10 bighas of land, refused to partition the property among his four sons, an enraged Chhatrapal attacked him with a sickle.
He suffered fatal neck injuries in front of his wife and other sons, and died on the way to hospital.
Lalaram's younger son Tarachand said, "Our father always advocated family unity. He never wanted to divide the land as it would further compromise the family's financial status. But our brother Chhatrapal used to create a ruckus over the issue every now and then."
Assistant district govt counsel, Digambar Patel, said that the court took a strong view of the crime, where "greed for property led a son to murder his own parent". On Thursday, additional sessions judge, Tabrez Ahmed, found the accused, Chhatrapal, guilty of killing his 65-year-old father and sentenced him to life in jail along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
