Bareilly: To curb rising road fatalities, Bareilly police decided to investigate road accidents to determine the exact cause of the mishaps. Police identified 17 thana areas in which almost 80% of fatalities purportedly took place.
"Each SHO will now be responsible for reviewing road engineering issues and coordinating with the departments for corrective action," Akmal Khan, SP traffic, told TOI.
Khan added: "Bareilly records around 500 deaths annually in road accidents. Negligence in driving and illegal truck parking on national highways and state highways cause accidents. All road accidents will now be investigated, in depth, along the lines of criminal investigation. The officer will file the data on the Integrated Road Accident Database (IRAD) system."
To strengthen field surveillance, critical corridor teams (CC teams) have been deployed across accident-prone areas. Each team will include one sub-inspector and four constables, with 17 SHOs, 17 sub-inspectors and 64 constables collectively patrolling key routes.
"The teams will focus on preventing illegal truck parking and removing temporary encroachments by commercial vehicles," Khan added.
