Free admissions, full plates: Puttur govt college’s campaign draws students across K’taka
Mangaluru: The Govt First Grade College, Puttur, in Jidekallu has decided to continue its free admission campaign for a second consecutive year, aiming to boost enrolment and support students from economically weaker backgrounds. Backed by sponsors and donors, the initiative will offer free seats to 100 students across BA, BCom and BCA courses, said principal Prof Subbappa Kaikamba.Encouraged by last year's response, the college has already begun outreach through social media and local networks. He told TOI: "We have received inquiries from nearby regions as well as North Karnataka. The interest, especially among girls, has been encouraging," the principal noted.Last year, 103 students enrolled under the scheme, with only four dropouts. The rest continue their studies, benefiting from both free education and midday meals supported by donors. A slight increase in university fees this year has not posed as a hurdle, the principal said. The initiative has also strengthened the college's connection with the community. "The visibility we gained after the campaign has been remarkable. Last academic year, when a 2,000-litre water tank broke, I posted about it on social media, and we received immediate support. Similarly, alumni and well-wishers regularly contribute towards midday meals," he said. Parental involvement has also improved significantly, with nearly 95% attendance at meetings. However, the college is located in a relatively remote area, and continues to face connectivity issues. One possible reason, the principal said, is the increasing preference for ITI diploma courses and paramedical courses. To address transport concerns, the college has coordinated with KSRTC to better align bus schedules with class timings. "Earlier, there were long gaps in bus services, especially in the evening. That has now been streamlined. Once our student strength reaches 100, we will request an additional service," he added. The campaign has already attracted students from across the state, including Chikkodi, Gadag, Hubballi, Belur in Hassan and Somwarpet in Kodagu. So far, around 21 admissions have been confirmed this year. The BCA programme is seeing particularly strong demand. While there are no final-year BCA students currently, the college is optimistic about introducing placement support once the current second-year batch reaches its final year.
