MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the
Madras high court on Wednesday extended its interim stay on operation of the rule banning sale of cattle for slaughter in animal markets, for four weeks.
The Centre on May 23 notified Rule 22(b) (iii) and Rule 22(e) in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulations of Livestock Markets) Rules 2017.
Madurai residents S Selvagomathy and Asik Elahi Baba filed a PIL demanding that the court declare the rule went against the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the Constitution.
