Pass orders on plea to restore channel in Theni village: HC
Madurai: Madras high court has directed the authorities to consider and pass orders on a representation seeking to desilt and restore the existing channel of Chikkanagounden kanmoi in Theni district.
A division bench of justice A D Jagadish Chandira and justice P Vadamalai passed the order while disposing of a public interest litigation filed by Karuppiah of Theni district.
The petitioner stated that Veppampatti village in Uthamapalayam taluk in the district, has several acres of agricultural land parcels which are dependent on the Chikkanagounden kanmoi for irrigation purposes. During the rainy season, a channel feeds water to the tank.
He stated that due to the inaction and negligence of the authorities, a portion of the channel has become obliterated and has not been desilted or renovated. He stated that restoration and desilting of the channel is necessary for the proper flow of rainwater into the tank.
He stated that he had submitted several representations seeking to restore and desilt the channel to ensure proper discharge of rainwater into the tank. However, no steps were taken. Hence, the petitioner moved court seeking relief.
