Tirunelveli: Tirunelveli corporation has slapped a fine of Rs1 lakh on a railway contractor after tonnes of food waste, food packaging plastics and other waste collected from trains were found dumped in Nainarkulam, Tirunelveli.
Following an inspection in ward 14, corporation officials led by city welfare officer N Balasubramaniam that visited the site in the Thachanallur zone found that waste had been dumped via trucks by the contractor.
Separately, in Melapalayam zone, a septic tank owner opposite the Porunai museum was fined Rs6,000 for discharging sewage water in a “manner harmful to the public,” under the order of the city welfare officer.
Corporation commissioner, Monika Rana, warned that if food waste was found to be illegally dumped in waterbodies, public places and riverbanks within the four zones of the corporation, vehicles would be confiscated, fines would be imposed on the house and vehicle owners, and strict legal action would be taken.
