MADURAI: Director of agriculture M Rajendran on Sunday inaugurated a millet processing unit at Sivarakottai in the Kallikudi block of Madurai district. The unit has a husk remover machine and a stone remover machine which can process 150 kilograms of millet per hour.
Another unit will be set up in Karisalkalanpatti village shortly.
Kallikudi block was selected under State Balanced Growth Fund by State Planning Commission after it was listed as one of the 105 blocks identified as backward ones by the commission.
The commission aims at empowering millet farmers to develop this block.
“For the balanced growth, it is important all the district and blocks achieve equal development. We are giving thrust to backward ones through various schemes and millet cultivation promotion has been initiated to Kallikudi block,” K R Jeganmohan, head of agriculture department in State Planning Commission, said.
