History-sheeter shot, arrested after attacking cop near Tiruchendur

Tuticorin: A history-sheeter facing more than 30 criminal cases, including murder, was shot and arrested after he allegedly opened fire at a police team attempting to nab him near Tiruchendur on Thursday.Police identified the accused as Anthony Maria Agnel, 36, of Tuticorin, who was wanted in a petrol bomb-hurling case registered at Tuticorin South police station and had been absconding. Acting on a tip-off that Agnel was hiding at Sonaganvilai near Tiruchendur, a five-member police team led by sub-inspector Raja Prabhu conducted a raid around 1.20pm on Thursday. Police said Agnel resisted arrest and allegedly pulled out a concealed country-made gun and shot at Prabhu, injuring him in the stomach. In retaliation, the officer opened fire in self-defence, injuring Agnel. Both Prabhu and Agnel sustained bullet injuries and were admitted to Tuticorin Medical College Hospital for treatment. Tiruchendur taluk police registered a case and further investigation is under way.
