Madurai: Two women construction workers were killed after a car allegedly driven by a drunk motorist rammed into them near Sayalkudi in Ramanathapuram district on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as V Panchavarnam, 45, of K Karisalkulam village and G Jayamani, 55, of K Karungulam.
According to police, the two women were working at a house construction site in Aaraichi Nagar on the Sayalkudi-Aruppukottai Road when an overspeeding car driven by V Ilavarasan, 42, of Abiramam, hit them.
Both women suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot. The car came to a halt a few metres away from the accident site.
Local residents who rushed to the spot alleged that Ilavarasan was driving under the influence of alcohol. He sustained minor injuries and was admitted to the Kadaladi government hospital.
Police said the bodies of the victims were sent for postmortem examination.
However, Ilavarasan allegedly escaped from the hospital while undergoing treatment. Sayalkudi police have registered a case and launched a search for him.
Traffic on the Sayalkudi-Aruppukottai Road was disrupted for nearly an hour following the accident.
