Woman killed, husband injured in accident
Ludhiana: A 53-year-old woman was killed and her husband critically injured after a speeding container truck rammed into their motorcycle near a religious place on the Ludhiana-Delhi National Highway near Khanna on Monday.
The deceased, Narinder Kaur, a resident of Rasidpur village in Fatehgarh Sahib district, died on the spot after being run over by the truck. Her husband, Bharpur Singh, sustained serious injuries.
Sources said the couple had gone to Khanna to meet an acquaintance and were on their way home when the accident occurred. The impact of the collision was so severe that Narinder Kaur was dragged under the vehicle, leading to her instant death.
Eyewitness Amandeep alleged that the container driver was speeding and tried to escape after the accident. She said locals chased and managed to apprehend him before handing him over to the police.
Another eyewitness, Amandeep Singh, said Bharpur Singh lay on the road for a considerable time, pleading for help. He alleged that in a shameful act, some bystander, instead of assisting the injured, allegedly stole his mobile phone and other belongings.
Bharpur Singh was initially taken to the govt hospital in Khanna and later referred to a hospital in Chandigarh for advanced treatment.
Police said they are investigating the matter.
