Ludhiana deploys AI to cut police response times.

Ludhiana: Punjab's industrial hub has become the third city in the state to launch an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), part of a high-tech policing surge designed to halve emergency response times.Director general of police Gaurav Yadav inaugurated the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at the Ludhiana Police Lines on Tuesday. The facility integrates traffic, emergency dispatch, and wireless units under one roof using AI (artificial intelligence), which Yadav said had already reduced Police Control Room (PCR) response times from 15 minutes to about seven minutes.The "Safe City" infrastructure includes a surveillance grid of 1,700 high-resolution cameras deployed at 259 strategic locations. For automated enforcement, there's ITMS technology at 46 intersections capable of detecting nine distinct violations, including speeding, red-light jumping, and riding without helmets.Unified command allows real-time coordination between field officers and specialised units to ensure "citizen-centric" grievance resolution. "The vision is to implement this integrated system across the state," Yadav said, noting that Ludhiana follows Jalandhar and Mohali in adopting the technology.Following the inauguration, the DGP reviewed the city's recent crackdown on organised crime and drug networks. Under Punjab's "Yudh Nashian Virudh" anti-drug initiative, Ludhiana police have registered 685 cases and arrested 810 individuals, seizing 6 kg heroin and more than 3 tonnes of poppy husk.In the ongoing operations against gangs, they arrested 229 suspects and seized 47 firearms. To bolster the force's morale, Yadav honored 51 high-performing officers before joining 550 personnel for a feast.
