Family of hit-n-run victim halts traffic in Ludhiana over police ‘inaction’.
Ludhiana: The busy Ferozepur road of this city was brought to a standstill for two hours on Monday as grieving relatives of a 48-year-old woman staged a protest, accusing police of failing to arrest the driver who mowed her down.Surinder Kaur, a security staffer at a private hospital, was killed on March 5 when a speeding Toyota Innova struck her and reportedly dragged her body along the road. Despite CCTV footage capturing the incident, her family alleges they were forced to take to the streets after police repeatedly delayed filing a formal case. The fatal collision occurred outside the hospital where Surinder Kaur, a resident of Baddowal, was employed. CCTV cameras installed on the thoroughfare captured the moment the speeding SUV struck the victim as she was crossing the road. Surinder Kaur's son, who had returned from abroad recently to visit her, was among members of the family who announced they would refuse to cremate her body until an arrest was made. The victim's brother, Gurtej Singh, claims the family did the bulk of the investigative work themselves, yet faced a wall of bureaucracy at the Sarabha Nagar police station. "We helped the police trace the vehicle and identify the owner, but they still did not register the case," Gurtej Singh said. "After multiple rounds to the station with no result, we were left with no choice but to block the road."Police ResponseThe protest caused a massive traffic jam on both sides of the highway before assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Ajit Singh reached the spot to negotiate with the agitators. The police provided the following update on the investigation. Police authorities used the registration number to find the original owner. The first owner claimed the vehicle had been sold to a second party.Cops are tracing the second owner and have promised an immediate arrest once the formal first-information report (FIR) is registered. Following these assurances, the family lifted the blockade but reiterated that the funeral would stay on hold until the perpetrator is in custody.
