Ludhiana: Two teenage girls from separate parts of the city allegedly died by suicide in incidents that have once again brought attention to the pressure faced by the students over academic performance.
In the first incident, reported from the Daresi area, a 16-year-old girl allegedly consumed acid after reportedly being distressed over her studies. The deceased was the eldest daughter of her family. Her father works as a daily-wage laborer.
Sources added that the deceased had failed in Class VIII and was under stress since then. They added that on the evening of May 26, she allegedly consumed acid at her residence.
Family members rushed her to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMC), where she remained under treatment. However, she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday.
Police said proceedings were initiated after the death and further investigation is under way.
In another incident, a 14-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself at her house. .
The deceased was a Class IX student. Her father is a laborer and the family was facing financial difficulties.
Sources said that the girl was upset after failing to clear her examinations and was under emotional distress.
The cops said the girl was found hanging in a room of her house. Family members immediately raised an alarm, but she could not be saved.
Both incidents have left the families devastated and sparked concern among parents and educators about the emotional impact of academic pressure on children. Police have initiated inquest proceedings in both cases.
