Youngsters seek refuge in cooling gadgets amid scorching heat
Lucknow: Amid the torrid weather conditions, residents are finding new ways to keep themselves cool. Earlier, people would enter malls or spend a few extra minutes at ATMs to seek relief from soaring mercury. But now, thanks to technology, portable cooling gadgets are offering much-needed relief.
From wearable neck fans and handheld mini fans to cooling towels and chilled skincare products, city’s youth has found the way to combat heat this summer.
Neck fans, designed to rest around the neck and direct airflow towards the face, are becoming popular among commuters and bikers.
“The weather feels worse when you are stuck on congested roads with no shade. A small gadget makes a big difference,” said Amaan Khan, a resident of Balaganj.
Portable mist fans are also finding takers among street vendors and delivery agents working long hours outdoors. Cooling towels are another rising trend among fitness enthusiasts. Made from moisture-retaining fabric, they create a chilling effect when soaked in water and placed around the neck or face.
“After buying a cooling towel, I was able to resume my morning walks,” said Chandra Punjabi, a resident of Burlington. Meanwhile, chilled sheet masks, cooling sheets and gel face packs stored in refrigerators are also becoming popular among youngsters.
“Cooling skincare products have become essential during summer,” said Shruti Shukla, a student at University of Lucknow.
Retailers contend that the demand for portable cooling devices has surged exponentially this summer. “We have witnessed nearly a 40%-50% rise in sales. Earlier, we sold around 100 products a week, now it is 140-150. Prices range from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000,” said Deepak Mishra, owner of Cable House in Naka.
Experts, however, advise caution on using these electronic gadgets. “Devices should be cleaned regularly and users must stay hydrated,” said Ashu Singh, a sales representative at Sony.
