Array of emotions at display

Lucknow: Visitors thronged Janjatiya Bhagidari Utsav to see mask exhibition organised by UP culture and social welfare departments on opening day of the 6-day festival at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan on Thursday. The exhibition showcases 90 masks made from materials like wood, cloth, bamboo, rubber and clay. These masks are of tribal people of west Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal and Sikkim."The masks play a vital role among tribal people, as they are worn by them during dance performance and while offering prayers," said a volunteer of the exhibition Deepak Rai. Masks symbolise different emotions like anger, fear, anxiety, happiness, sadness, pride, betrayal, love, loneliness and depression. Masks also denote faces of gods, monsters, animals, birds and fishes, he added. A visitor, Aman Trikha, student of fine arts, said, "Beauty and detailing of each mask is mesmerising and I could not remove my eyes from them." Besides exhibition, around 100 stalls on tribal books, jewellery, paintings, handicrafts, bedsheets, home decor, accessories, crockery, wood toys, utensils and food have been set up in the festival.
