Bengal polls 2026: SUCI announces first list of 230 candidates

KOLKATA: SUCI (Communist) on Monday announced its first list of 230 candidates for the 2026 assembly polls. The party was at the forefront of several movements, including the rape and murder of the doctor at the R G Kar Medical College, and contested 184 seats in the 2021 assembly poll.The party pitched a host of young faces who were at the forefront of movements. Sushrita Soren, who will contest from Midnapore, was one of the agitators at JU last year when students stopped education minister Bratya Basu's vehicle and started agitating in front of it. Soren was arrested and was allegedly tortured in police custody. Anumita Pani, a former student of Jogamaya Devi College, will contest from the Bhowanipore constituency. Doctors such as Anshuman Mitra, secretary of the Medical Service Center, and Nilratan Naiya, Kolkata district secretary of the MSC, who were at the forefront of the R G Kar movement, will also contest."This is the first list and we might add a second list of the candidates," said Chandidas Bhattacharya, state secretary.
